Update
on Loons and the Chicks!

Being at the cottage over the 4th of July week, I planned on getting some update photos of the chicks.

|
We
were up at the cottage over the week of the 4th of July. It was very
windy for a few days and couldn't get out to see the loons.
Finally on July 4th it was calmer and I went out looking for the loons.
I found one, but it just wandered away from me. I'm guessing it wanted
to move me away from the chicks, which were probably hidden along the
shore somewhere. After awhile, I turned and paddle back, knowing it
wasn't going to take me to the chicks.

Two
days later we were walking our dog down to the park, which sets on a
point near where the loon nest is placed, and I spotted the loons from
shore. They were heading into the cove, and rather secluded area in the
NW corner of the lake. So when we got back from our walk, I took my
kayak out around into the cove. Sure enough, they were there.

As soon as I got a few hundred yards away, the male started coming toward me and squawking and letting me know to back off!
|
I
paddled backward and moved away till the male went back to the chicks.
Then I 'hid' in the reeds on the shoreline. There I was able to take a
few more photos from a distance. The one on the right was the best one
(cropped). I then left them alone.
