Three Chicks!
June 25, 2025 by
Gene Klco

We went to at the cottage in late June knowing from neighbors there that the loons hatched 3 chicks. They were first spotted on June 17th (2 chicks) and June 19th (3 Chicks). Whoopie! We went up on June 21st, unfortunately, the wind was high all weekend and I wasn’t able to get out to photograph them. I had some personal reasons to leave before I could get my own photos.

Loon with 3 Chicks

Thanks to my friend Randy Stout, who is more dedicated to his photography, got out early in the morning and boated to find them in the southwest corner of the lake in the calm area sheltered from the wind. Randy used a 900mm lens and ‘heavily cropped’ this photo of the loon and 3 chicks. (used with permission)

Another of his photos of the loon and chicks.

Yesterday while Randy was photographing the loons, the parents went to ward off a rogue loon, and left Randy to ‘chick sit’ with the triplets. He was then able to photograph them together.

As you can see, Randy is a great photographer!
Glad he is a good friend and was happy for me to post these photos.
