The Chicks Are No Longer Chicks

July 30, 2023 by Gene Klco

Seeing the loon chicks recently, I found that not only are they doing well, they are growing up rapidly. Now at 6 weeks old, they are moving to the juvenile stage.

The loon family graced us with their presence one day recently. They swam all afternoon in front of our cottages. I was able to kayak out later in the day and just drift very slowly their way and got some update photos.

Loons

The chicks are noticeably larger and are losing their fuzzy baby feathers.

These photos how the feathers on their head are dropping off and the adult feathers are filling in.

Juvie blow-up

This close-up shows them better.

Some of the feathers on their back and wings are looking more adult as well.
Time to call them juvies!
