Update on the Loon Nesting

May 7, 2023 by Gene Klco

I observed the loon pair circling the nest on Friday morning. They acted like they wanted to get on, but for some reason did not.

I kayaked over to the nest to get a closer look when the loons were nowhere in sight. I found a broke clam shell on the nest and it looked like something had been on the nest. I wondered if another animal had climbed on the nest in the last few weeks since it has been up and somehow ‘defiled’ it per loon standards.

Reed Haul

The only thing I could think to do was to replace the reeds that make up the nesting material on the platform. I decided to take some ‘new’ reeds over to the nest and replace the old reeds with new.

So I piled some more reeds that had washed in the shore in front of our cottage on an old sailboard and towed it over to the nest.

I replaced the whole center of the bed of the platform with the new reeds…

… and generally cleaned up the bed to make it look better.

Nest

Loons watching

And all the while I was doing this the loon pair watched me from a far.

They stuck around to see me leave the area and kayak away, then disappeared.

I was only around the lake for the rest of the day and never saw them near or on the nest before leaving.

We will be back in a week and will hope to see them on the nest.
