Loon ANP Problem in
2014
August 2,
2022 by Gene Klco
Even though I put the ANP in late this year (May 12, 2022), I
was too early only a few weeks earlier in 2014.
In
2014 we went to the cottage near the end of April (April 23th) to
put the ANP in, only to find ice still on the lake. There was an open area near
the shore and I took advantage of it and kayaked along and through some of the
open water and thin ice.

It was a fun and unique experience.

This
was to be a short trip from Wednesday to Friday. We had to go home on Friday.
The next day I thought it was going to be OK to put the ANP out since it was to
go in the area of open water and that area was protected from the prevailing SW
wind by a point of land. So on Thursday, I gathered the ANP and set off to put
it out. It went out pretty well. Even
though my waders leaked, I was glad I decided to do it.

Later that evening, I checked it out with binoculars from our
cottage. All was well.

But then in the middle of the night, the wind shifted and a
storm blew in from the SE side and blew the ice into the NW corner of the lake.
We woke to find the ANP pushed up on shore with a lot of ice in the way of
putting it back. So much for getting the ANP out early.

Fortunately, we have friends who live in the area and were
willing to go and put it back out after the ice melted. That year the loons
nested and had 2 eggs with one chick hatching on 6/9/14 and the other egg was
infertile. The chick disappeared soon after though.
Lesson learned – don’t put the ANP out till the ice is
completely gone!
